Unveiling the Invisible

In this project, I embarked on creating a typographic installation within the vibrant confines of the fashion design department located on the 6th floor of the tower building at Massachusetts College of Art & Design. I delved into understanding the space, engaging with its regular occupants, such as faculty and students, and observing its dynamics from various angles.

Conceptualization and Design

After immersing myself in the environment and gathering insights from the community, I envisioned transforming the hallway into a dynamic runway, harnessing the ambient lighting to accentuate its resemblance to a fashion catwalk. Taking into account feedback and desires expressed by individuals within the department, I aimed to craft an installation that would inspire and motivate those entering the space.

Transforming Vision into Tangible Beauty

The execution of the installations involved meticulous planning, including measurements, material selection, and custom design work. Despite the technical challenges, the end result garnered overwhelming praise from both students and faculty within the fashion design department. The installation not only served as a visual spectacle but also as a source of pride and empowerment for the community, symbolizing the department's creativity and innovation. This typographic installation stands as a testament to the transformative power of design in elevating spaces and inspiring individuals. It is a celebration of craftsmanship, innovation, and the enduring legacy of the fashion design department.

Wall Installation

To achieve this, I extended the typographic runway concept to include the entrance wall of the department. Utilizing vinyl and tape, I meticulously designed a welcoming wall bearing the department's title, "Fashion Design," while paying homage to esteemed faculty and alumni. The typography, primarily in Helvetica, was tailored to complement the clean aesthetic of the space while incorporating playful elements such as connecting lines and the motivational phrase “Bring it to the runway”.

Floor Installation

Transitioning from the wall to the floor, I employed white duct tape to craft a striking typographic pathway spanning the entire length of the hallway. Observing the inherent grid-like pattern of the floor tiles, I capitalized on this feature to create a custom typeface, meticulously spacing letters and words to optimize visual impact. The resulting 90-foot-long runway, adorned with oversized lettering, exuded a sense of empowerment and energy, further amplified by strategic lighting.

Make it stand out

It all begins with an idea. Maybe you want to launch a business. Maybe you want to turn a hobby into something more. Or maybe you have a creative project to share with the world. Whatever it is, the way you tell your story online can make all the difference.
